Although the description claims these chips were soaked in brandy, it neglects to mention that they were apparently used by a winery to impart oak flavoring to their brandy. So all of the oak flavoring has gone out of them, and into the brandy. Of course, almost all of the brandy was drained from them too, and it wouldn't surprise me if a short purging rinse were applied as well, to get the last few gallons of brandy out of them. What you're buying here is a bunch of very mildly brandy flavored cellulose chips. Gone are all the natural oak vanillins, sugars and resins that are the prized characteristics of toasted French oak. You'd get more flavor running yard trimmings through a chipper, then seasoning them with a wine reduction.
