Weber 7371001 Summit E-670 Propane Gas Grill, Black Review
I've owned an older red hood Weber Genesis Propane grill for the last 14 years (bought new from Home Depot in '97) and it's still going strong, but I moved it up to our cabin last year and didn't have anything at home to grill with. I've been looking at various grills for the past 5 years online and in the local BBQ store and finally spent the money on this Summit. Webers have a reputation of lasting a long time as I experienced with my older one, and warranty to back it, and the build quality is top notch on this Summit. It arrives on a pallet and needs 2 adults to lift the grill off the plastic base, so factor that in when it's delivered. You can't do this with only one person.I got my Summit E670 yesterday and my first impression was "wow, it's big!!". It assembled very easily (only 7 screws) and after getting 2 new propane cylinders+fills I cooked up my first dinner on it last night. It only uses 1 20# bottle, but I like to keep 2 in rotation in case I run low, or in case we need to use the grill in a disaster (it's part of our emergency food plan).
I really enjoyed using the front-to-back burner arrangement with the large cooking area. I was able to do 3 steaks at the same time. The 2 thinner ones cooked faster so I moved them to the other side over a lower flame to keep them hot and slow the cook rate while I finished the slightly thicker one in the hotter area. With my old Genesis they have a side-to-side burner arrangement which doesn't leave much room to get the faster cooking meats of the direct heat (I used to turn off the front burner and do indirect cooking there, but that's not easy with bigger steaks like a full tri-tip). I also had enough room to cook up corn, asparagus and brussel sprouts each wrapped in aluminum and 2 hot-dogs for my daughter. The Summit gets a lot hotter than my old Genesis, so there's a little adaption time if you are migrating to this unit from one of the smaller, lower BTU ones, but with 6 burners and lots of space, it really allows you to spread out if you need to.
The 2011 unit I got has a digital tank scale readout for the propane tank on the panel. The tank hanger just inside the right door also is marked with a scale, similar to the Genesis, so the fancy light-up scale is nice but not completely necessary. The knob lights are neat too, but are not really too useful since I grill on our deck and use an outside light when it's dark and I'm cooking. For the same reason, I haven't installed the 2 handle lights yet.
I have to say that the 2011 model is well thought out (as are all the Weber gas grills that I've seen). All the usual things are in the right place and easy to get to and use. I really liked the rotisserie spike hangers that are built into a shelf inside the left door and there's a slot under the right external burner to put the rod inside the lower area. Keeps everything tidy and organized.
It's personal choice, but I preferred the black enamel surfaces on the hood over the stainless since the eventual discoloration I've heard about on the un-enameled (shiny) metal hood would drive me nuts, and my old red hood on the Genesis has held up very well over the years (no chips or rusting). I really wished Weber still did the copper colored enamel still, but that was discontinued in 2009, and black is my 2nd choice... kind of like the old Model-T Fords... any color you want as long as it's black.
Love this grill and looking forward to many years of use. Happy grilling!
